The DVD key must be extracted from the old drive and patched into the firmware of

the new drive, which is why a basic switch of drives won't work.

 

DVD drives are always replaced with an identical drive and identical firmware so the

fact that the drive has been changed cannot be detected by the console therefore

allowing it to work as new.
